Explanation of Styles

NEW :: Premium Catalogs
NEW :: Budget Catalog
NEW :: Full Length Mixes
BPM ::Beats Per Minute.  Meaning, the pace or speed of the beat which in turn means the pace or speed of the music.  The faster the bpm, the faster the song.  The slower the bpm, the slower the song.  While this isn't exactly a "genre", we thought this term would be important to explain to those who are not familiar with what "bpm" stands for since every song in our catalog has a bpm listing.

POP DANCE ::  "pop" meaning popular.  This is by far the most widely used format and found in most top 40 dance produced musical styles.  This particular genre fits almost all ages and uses.  The music uses typical 4x4 patterned electronic drums with disco styled percussion, simple bouncy bass lines & bright & cheery synth melodies.  Vocals are generally very pleasing and positive with comfortable builds & sequences.

DISCO HOUSE ::  This style was derived from the late 70's disco boom.  This particular musical genre incorporates familiar sounding disco sequences and filters them in over a modern club dance drum pattern and bass line.  Usually, there are several filtered disco elements layered on top of each other to give it a new & unique sound while maintaining the original "disco" feel.  Like our "Pop Dance" genre, this is a very easy, pleasing & uplifting style popular by all age groups and production styles.  This genre has been our most popular used by TV networks & DVD productions.

LATIN HOUSE :: Another extremely popular genre by all age groups and production projects.  This style focuses on traditional Latin flavors (guitars, pianos, congas, etc) and blends them into a pumping club beat.  Latin elements & melodies can be filtered over the club beats or simply arranged with builds & breaks.  In the end, the main focus is on the Latin melodies giving you LATIN HOUSE.

TECHNO / HARDSTYLE::  This particular genre actually has hundreds of sub classifications but we have decided for simplicity purposes, to bulk them all together and give you our best description of this well known club style.  "Techno" originally stems from the use of electronic styled sounds & sequences.  Heavy electronic drum machines, spacey synths, chunky bass lines, computerized vocal drops & high pitched synth leads.  Techno has actually evolved a great deal over the last few decades.  What we know as techo now, is not what was known as techno during the "rave era" back in the 90's.  Today, techno is more developed.  It has more substance than its predecessors.  Today, techno is more mainstream while keeping its original hardcore electronic sounds.  More cutting edge & futuristic for sure but also much more motivating with much more impact.  When reviewing songs in this genre, although they are "techno" placed, they may have very subtle but important & unique differences between each song.

TRANCE / PROGRESSIVE::  Although this genre stems from "techno", it is different enough to have its own genre placement.  The main difference between original techno & trance is the use of more "string styled" synths to create an almost electronic sounding symphony.  Unlike techno which tends to be a bit harder and more sequenced, trance is uplifting and builds by use of drum builds, fills, drops & synth leads & melody layers that continually evolve into an epic sounding climax of sound.  What makes "PROGRESSIVE" slightly different than standard trance or techno is that it combines the best from both genres.  Chunkier bass lines, more techno oriented synths with trancy leads and builds.  Like our more mainstream "pop dance, disco house & latin house" formats, TRANCE is widely used for all age demographics and found to be the most motivating of all our genres.

EURO TECHNO / DANCE ::  This is a fairly newer genre that became popular on the mainstream top 40 charts not less than a decade ago.  What makes this style so unique is the way it was produced.  Drums tend to be a bit more upfront (heavy kicks & snares)  Bass lines tend to be more compressed & bouncy.  Synth rhythm sequences tend to follow the drum & bass line becoming more of a layer than its own rhythm.  Lead melodies are very cheery and bouncy.  Almost like circus music but not--if that makes any sense............  When vocals are included, the vocals are generally very angelic but build up to heavy "anthem" styled "hands in the air" feel.  Much of our most recent catalogs are in this particular style due to its massive success & popularity on the dance charts today as well as its very happy sounding melodies which tend to be a favorite for all ages & productions.

TRIBAL / ETHNIC / DRUMS ::  Tribal club music ruled the dance charts in the late 90's to the early millennium and was dominated by east coast producers & DJs.  Dance clubs loved this genre because of the focus on the percussion (congas, toms, African drums, etc) that followed the heavy club beats so well.  As tribal club progressed over the years, more synth & bass melodies were incorporated.  Vocals always followed what was happening with the tribal percussions.  Today, tribal still plays an important role in club music production but now, it has become more of an element instead of the focus.  In our songs that feature this genre, you'll find both.   Regarding "Ethnic" styled dance music, this is becoming a very popular choice for productions because of its world beat apeal.  Not sure if there is actually an "ethnic dance / house" genre out there but maybe we started it!  What is "ethnic dance"?  Very simply -- Dance music that is somewhat exotic sounding using cultural flavors from the middle east, Greek isles, Asian & African territories as well as roots Latin & Indian.  Take these sounds and mix them to a traditional dance club beat and there you go!!

BREAK BEAT / FUNKY ::  An extremely popular genre by our clients!  The term "break beat" was made because of the way the drums were used.  In normal songs in all genres there is always a "break" or fill to bridge you to the next sequence or verse in the song.  A "drum break" is usually a roll of the toms or doubling of the snare and kick.  It normally lasts about 4-8 beats at the end of a sequence or pattern then goes back into the regular portion of a song.  With BREAKBEAT, the "break" has become the main part of the song.  James Brown popularized the Break Beat style with his song "Funky Drummer".  Our "break beat" selections have the best of all styles.  Funky drum beats, motivating bass & synth sequences and powerful vocal drops and maximum impact production.  This genre is good with hip hop & urban formats but also great for techno formats.  It blends them both together very well.

DRIVING / ANTHEM ::  Listed in our Techno style category.  You'll see this term listed within genres but never alone.  The reason is that this is actually not a genre but more of a description of the "mood" of a song.  It would mostly be included with techno or trance.  The term "Driving" means that the song is designed to evolve and take you along with it.  The song has many builds and keeps building until it comes to an end.  The "Anthem" description is usually tied to a song that has a "hands in the air" feel and makes you want to jump up and scream.  These terms are closely tied to adrenaline and how it effects your body.  When you see these terms included with a genre, it usually means that the particular song is extremely motivating from beginning to end without any drops or lulls.

OLDIES / SWING ::  Exactly how it sounds.  Music designed in the traditional format of rockabilly, jazz swing & big band.  The main difference is that our songs are produced with a hint of modern day influence usually in the drums but not always.

NEW AGE / EASY LISTENING ::  The style 'new age' was made very popular by artists like Enya, Yani, etc.  Today, there are new threads called "lounge" which has become modern day choices for softer musical styles.  In all forms of new age & easy listening, the focus is on creating a mild & calming mood.  The music is usually very atmospheric and contains natural sounds of nature & soft strings & flowing airy instruments.  When drums are included, it is usually somewhat exotic & percussive.  In this genre, the music is much slower and softer.  Almost always, the music is instrumental and if any vocals did exist within the song, it is usually designed to be part of the instrumentation instead of standing out as actual verses.

EXPLANATION OF MUSIC GENRES ::
Our music is divided up by producer catalogs.  At the moment, the only catalog that lists the musical genre is our B&K HOWE catalog.  We plan to update all other catalogs with the same genre classification.  We have provided this page to better explain what a "musical genre" is and why it is so important to understand the differences in musical styles based on the genre they fall into.  By better understanding the purpose of musical genres, you will be able to easily find other compatible music styles that best suit your production needs.
